Der britische Musikschriftsteller. Er war 1964 bis 1981 Musikkritiker für die Londoner Tageszeitung "The Times" und 1967 bis 1987 Herausgeber von "The Musical Times". Herausgeber des "New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians" (1980), "The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments" (1984), "The New Grove Dictionary of Opera" (1992), "New Grove Book of Operas" (1996), "Calling on the Composer: A Guide to European Composer Museums and Memorials" (2005, mit Julie Anne Sadie).
